need to extend your electrode.  In a perfect world, every weld is done on a flat plate and right in front of you on your workbench and you can extend your electrode around 1\/4\" and still get a good You pretty much have to cut it with a grinder or at least score it with a grinder before you break it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a pretty small price to pay for an all purpose tungsten electrode that works on \u003cem\u003ecarbon steels, stainless steel, nickel alloys, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, cobalt, copper alloys, pot metal, and \u003cstrong\u003eeverything else.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBack around 2009, I did a lot of testing of different types of tungsten electrodes. I worked for a major airline maintenance department training and certifying welders to do weld repairs on aircraft parts. The only type of electrode stocked in the tool room at that time was 2% thoriated electrodes and that is what we used on everything. Stainless, Nickel alloys, titanium, aluminum, magnesium…all of it was welded using 2% thoriated tungsten.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were a few welders who managed to get some pure tungsten, or zirconiated tungsten for aluminum and magnesium - but for the most part, even magnesium gearboxes were welded using 2% thoriated… and sure, it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut when a safety rep posed the question, \"Are there other alternatives to 2% thoriated that offer good performance with no radiation?\" I tested several types of electrodes to find out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWithout going into a bunch of numbers on low amp arc starts, the results of lots of tests showed me that \u003cstrong\u003e2% lanthanated was just as good or \u003cem\u003ebetter\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e than 2% thoriated. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo we switched and it worked out well. Low amp applications like build up on edges of turbine and compressor blades worked fine.  In a perfect world, every weld is done on a flat plate and right in front of you on your workbench and you can extend your electrode around 1\/4\" and still get a good looking weld on mitred joints like on stainless handrails, stainless steel boat stanchions, and even just areas that are easy enough to get access to but that are made from inconel or hastelloy, where anything less as a contract welder to weld some prototype heat exchangers made from an exotic and crack sensitive nickel alloy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe welds had to be welded using haynes 556 wire (a nickel wire that can have a very sluggish puddle if not shielded well with argon).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe previous welder was not using a gas lens, \u003cem\u003eand you could tell and \u003cem\u003ehis welds looked as shiny as a new penny… and passed the pressure tests \u003cstrong\u003eno problem.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd then they offered him a permanent job making more than he had ever made before.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo how much was that worth?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI am not saying that using this gas lens kit will get you a job offer, but this situation illustrates just how much difference a gas lens can make.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eIf you are already using a \u003cspan style=\"color:
