The “1 Amp per 1 Thousandth” Rule

A common TIG rule of thumb for carbon steel is about 1 amp for every 0.001" of material thickness. So 0.125" material is roughly 125 amps as a starting point.

Welding Tips and Tricks notes that this rule is most useful on thinner material and starts to drift once material gets thicker. For carbon steel, Jody commonly references this rule up to about 0.125", with settings adjusted by puddle control, joint type, and fit-up.

These settings are starting points only. Actual settings depend on fit-up, travel speed, torch angle, tungsten prep, cup setup, gas coverage, and how the puddle responds.
